What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is an opportunity to sit with another and behold the work of the Sacred in everyday life. Through the exploration of prayer, reflective listening and companionship, spiritual direction allows one to discern the deep movement of the Spirit’s call in one’s life.

Spiritual direction is possible through both in person and virtual accompaniment.

FAQs

What happens in a spiritual direction session?

The director creates a safe place for sharing a person’s spiritual journey.  During a spiritual direction session, the director asks questions of the directee to help them see how the Divine is working in their life.  The director reflects back to the directee what they hear through the sharing of the directee’s prayer experiences.

What is the frequency and duration of sessions?

A spiritual direction session lasts typically around 50 - 60 minutes. Directees meet with the director once or twice a month.

Why is spiritual direction important?

Spiritual direction helps a person begin to notice the way they move through the world and how this movement truly does have an impact on themselves and society.  Noticing the way God is present in a person’s life allows them to have an increased openness and approach to seeing God in all things.

What is the financial commitment for spiritual direction?

MaryAnne works with people to offer a sliding scale payment option as to allow for financial access.

Who benefits from spiritual direction?

All people who are seeking to grow in their spiritual life and tend to their soul can benefit from spiritual direction.  Increasing a person’s ability to reflect on life and the movement of the Sacred can open up pathways to healing and transformation. As a person engages with this healing and transformation, they may begin to live differently in the world.

How is this different than psychotherapy?

Spiritual direction is focused on a person’s relationship with God, prayer life and transformation. Psychotherapy is focused on a specific goal, psychological fitness and emotional well-being. Spiritual direction allows for the Spirit of God to lead the person to greater freedom through their spiritual life.

Testimonials

Affirming. Supportive.

“As a queer person in-between faith traditions, finding a spiritual director who was affirming and supportive was imperative to me - MaryAnne is just that and so much more. Her gentle and careful questions, along with her generous and inquisitive personality, foster a space for me to dive deeper and push the boundaries of what I thought possible for my spiritual life and my experience of the Divine. Every session with MaryAnne is a gift and I always walk away feeling healthily challenged and beautifully refreshed. I cannot recommend her as a spiritual director highly enough!” - M.

Listening. Present.

“I know that ‘director’ is the traditional term, but I prefer to use the word ‘companion.’ We all need companions on our journey, to help us hear what God is trying to say to us; to help us slow down and listen and pay attention. MaryAnne has been that companion for me these past five years. I have had a number of spiritual companions over the last 30 years, all with their different gifts. MaryAnne has the gift of true listening, of being fully present. She can recall things you have said in the past and tie those to things you are praying about now. I am grateful for her companionship." -T
